Please join us next Wednesday, December 17th for our last tasting event of the year. We'll be highlighting wines of the festive season – from prosecco, cava and champagne to late harvest, dessert wines and port... plus a few of our favourites. This event will be held in a fun grazing style where various stations will be set-up around the store for guests to peruse, taste and explore. There will be an assortment of artisanal cheeses, charcuterie, breads and other gourmet edibles to nibble on. And in the spirit of the season, 10% of all purchases from the event will go to Make a Wish Foundation of Canada. For the lucky, there will be door prizes and other special surprises, the release of some cult wines (ie: Nota Bene and Burrowing Owl) for purchase. All in all, we couldn't think of a better way to close out the year. Hope to see you here!

Be sure to book your spot as soon as possible as there is very limited space for this event!

Cheers to the holiday season!

We just received our shipment of Beaujolais Nouveau 2008! Join us this Saturday, between 4–7pm, as we taste the first wines of the new harvest.

Made from Gamay grapes, it is produced in the Beaujolais region of France and it is the most popular vin de primeur. The crushed grapes are fermented for just a few weeks then officially released for sale on every third Thursday of November. This is a ritual that is now celebrated around the globe.

Beaujolais Nouveau is best served slightly chilled as it enhances the ripe fruit flavours. The colour is bright purple-pink, the tannins are soft and it is a quaffable, fun wine. It goes particularly well with light cheeses such as Brie.

We have 3 sizes to choose from. They are the 375ml, 750ml and the 1.5L bottles.

Special Event: La Quercia Restaurant + Castello di Bossi Winery!
Monday, October 27th, 8pm at the Wine Shop

We have some news for next Monday's event. Adam and Lucais of La Quercia have come up with their food pairings and we'll be trying all the wines today to finalize both our wine notes and the chefs' flavours. Exciting stuff!

On the news front, La Quercia was just named one of Vancouver's best new restaurants in the November 2008 issue of Vancouver Magazine. In the article "New Wave Dining", food writer Andrew Morrison notes, "La Quercia, a 30-seater that specializes in Northern Italian on Fourth Avenue's western edge, has played to full houses since opening in July. The two young chef/owners, Lucais Syme (formerly of La Buca and Cioppino's) and Adam Pegg (a graduate of Italy's Higher Institute of Gastronomy)... are omnipresent and intensely focused on quality control, which has proved magnetic." We are very happy to have Lucais and Adam with us on Monday evening and look forward to tasting their creations.

There are only a few days left to book your spot... hope to see you there!

CASTELLO DI BOSSI
Castello di Boosi is located in the commune of Castelnuovo Berardenga, on the road that leaves the old Chiantigiana road, at Pianella, and ascends to Brolio amidst evergreen forests and long rows of vines. With its centuries-old trees, its fossil beds, and richly varied native vegetation, this unique spot has always aroused curiosity, even in remote times, and experts have studied its characteristics. The name Bossi would seem to derive from the money chest which the Roman army would carry to its encampments to pay the soldiers; the word probably refers to the boxwood, a rare and prized wood at that time, from which the chest was built. Inscriptions dating from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, discovered in an ancient wall of the canonry in San Marcellino, indicate that this area was the site of a Roman settlement.

In 1985 Castello di Bossi Estate was purchased as an investment and a side business by the Bacci Family, textile and clothing manuracturer in Firenze. Their first Super Tuscan Corbaia (sangiovese/cabernet blend) was bottled that year and also vineyards were replanted. But Marco Bacci's passion to produce world class Tuscan wines and his dedication and love to Tuscany prompted him to devote full time on the 300 plus acres estate. Decanter Magazine named this family winery as one of Italy's 10 most exciting producers in May 2003.

Wines are produced from 3 estates in Tuscany: Terre di Talamo in Maremma, Castello di Bossi in Castelnuovo Berardenga, Siena and Renieri in Montalcino. We should continue to see exciting wines coming from these estates as Marco along with his consulting winemaker Alberto Antonini (one of Wine Spectator's top 4 Consulting Winemaker and formerly with Antinori) are committed to produce world class wines.

passomaggio
Terre di Talamo Morellino di Scansano DOCG 2006

Winemaker's Notes: Superbly rich ruby-red appearance. Classic Maremma characteristics on the nose, with crisp fruit fragrances melding beautifully with earthy notes. The palate exhibits a solid structure with impressive depth, and a judicious equilibrium between alcoholic warmth and tannic weave. Very long tasty finish. Tempo is the perfect match for roasted meats, stews, omelettes and truffle-scented dishes.

Chianti Classico Riserva Berardo 2003

Winemaker's Notes: A rich, luminous ruby red. Appealing, crisp notes of menthol emerge on the nose, blending beautifully with more developed aromas reminiscent of cinchona and tamarind. The wine enters smooth and almost creamy, massive and full, but not in the least aggressive. Tannins are well integrated with the alcohol, and a seductive, tasty finish lingers quite long. Recommended with roasted or barbecued meats, stews, casseroles and sausages.

Gorolamo 2003

The 2001 Girolamo (100% Merlot) is a fat, juicy wine packed with jammy blueberry and blackberry sensations on a full-bodied frame. It offers outstanding length and plenty of structure....Anticipated maturity: 2007-2015. — Wine Advocate - Issue #171 / June 29, 2007 - 91 points
$23.90
x
Corbaia 2003

Marco Bacci and consultant Alberto Antonini make this blend of 70 percent sangiovese and 30 percent cabernet sauvignon at an ancient property in the Chianti heartland near Castelnuovo Berardenga. This 2003 is bright and fresh, with a cool, spicy edge to its plummy fruit. What’s noteworthy about this wine is the structure, where sinewy tannins edge the rich fruit in a way that feels complex and totally Tuscan. The overall impression is of lasting grace and power. It’s a wine to watch evolve over the course of a decade.
Wine & Spirits - April 2008 - 94 points - Year's Best Tuscan Reds
x
Vin San Laurentino - Vino da Tavola 1999

The 1999 Vin San Laurentino is a sweet wine made from Sangiovese and Trebbiano. The fruit is dried for 5 months, and the wine is aged for eight years in small barrels. This gorgeous, creamy-textured wine shows superb depth and richness with remarkable complexity, yet remains light on its feet. Toffee, caramel, burnt sugar, dried fruits and mint are just some of the aromas and flavors that emerge from this seductive gem of a wine. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018. — eRobertParker - Issue #177 (June 2008) - 93 points

Special Event: La Quercia Restaurant + Castello di Bossi Winery!
Monday, October 27th, 8pm at the Wine Shop

Cost: $45

We're very excited to announce our upcoming Chef(s) + Winemaker event with La Quercia and Castello Di Bossi. Our special guests will be Chefs/owners Lucais Syme and Adam Pegg of Kitsilano's newest Italian Trattoria, La Quercia and Winemaker/owner, Marco Bacci of Tuscany's Castello di Bossi. Join us on Monday, October 27th at 8pm, for an Italian inspired evening of creative food and wine pairings. We'll be tasting a selection of Tuscan and Super Tuscan reds as well as a beautiful dessert wine to finish, all expertly paired by La Quercia.

The Castello family estate is located in the small picturesque village of Bossi which is in the southernmost part of the Chianti Classico region. Their vineyards are dedicated to growing Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The Cab and Merlot varietals were planted as far back as 40 years ago, making them among the oldest plantings in all of Tuscany. Marco Bacci will take us on a tour of Tuscany, share with us his vineyard stories and history of the region. This will be Marco's first time visiting Canada and his only public event in Vancouver.

La Quercia is one of Vancouver's newest and most authentic regional Italian restaurants. Chefs Lucais Syme and Adam Pegg, formerly of La Buca and Parkside, share a wealth of talent and experience. Their focus is on Slow Food and regional Italian cuisine. Their pastas are made by hand, ingredients are sourced locally and are organic where possible. Their approach is to mix traditional and contemporary plates, prepared with precise technique. For this event, Lucais and Adam have created specific pairings that will explore the tradition and romance of Italian food and wine.

An event not to be missed!

Fall is one of our favorite times of the year and one of the big highlights of the season is Thanksgiving dinner with family and friends. So much food and wine to enjoy! From the oven roasted turkey, savoury stuffing, sweet yams, fluffy mashed potatoes, rich gravy and tart cranberry sauce to the traditional pumpkin or pecan pie to finish—all these present a medley of flavours, textures and aromas that can make wine pairings a challenge. Here are some of our suggestions and faves...

WHITE WINES
For white wine lovers, there is nothing like a dry or off-dry German or Alsatian style wine. The abundant acidity and residual sweetness of these wines are strong enough to stand up to the saltiness and richness of herbed stuffing drowning in decadent gravy! Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Siegerrebbe, Ehrenfelser both dry and off-dry are all perfection with a Thanksgiving feast. A buttery Chardonnay will compliment the stuffing. A Sauvignon Blanc will help cut through the richness of the sauces.

RED WINES
For red wine lovers, a light to medium bodied and fruitier style of wine is great as they have softer tannins and will compliment all the different flavour profiles in your meal. Pinot Noir, Beaujolais, even a Zinfandel will do if you like something with more body and lots of fruit.

BUBBLY
And let’s not forget the bubbles. All bubbles and any bubbles will do! Prosecco, Champagne or Sparkling are great as an aperitif and to begin the festivities with.

turkey symbol
For your convenience, we have marked our Thanksgiving wine picks throughout the store with a Turkey symbol.
These are some of our faves and ones that will be sitting at our table!

Weekend Tasting
We will be trying a selection of Thanksgiving dinner wines on both Saturday and Sunday, between 4—7pm. Hope to see you then!

Thanksgiving Store Hours
We’re open throughout the Thanksgiving long weekend from 11am – 9pm as usual.

We recently traveled to the far, far East "Vancouver" to Lime Japanese Cuisine on Commercial Drive. Friends of ours insisted that we go try them out and we're glad we did. We've actually been back a couple times already! To give a bit of the history (Cliff Claven moment), the previous restaurant in the space was called Rime, a Turkish jazz haunt. The owners closed down the space and renovated into a sleek, modern look and relaunched as a contemporary Japanese bistro. They've got some powerhouse talent in the kitchen with the raw bar overseen by Chef Masaaki Kudo, previously of Blue Water Café and Tojo’s and the hot dishes are by Chef Kayo Ukai, formerly of Yoshi Japanese Restaurant... all on our list of Japanese faves.

When we arrived, the place had a good vibe and a smooth jazz duo was doing their thing. We had reservations so we were seated right away and we were quite excited by the items on the menu. We've tried a wide selection from their menu. One after the other, the dishes were creative, tasty and beautifully executed. The sushi and sashimi are top notch. The dessert menus were handmade by one of the staff (a nice touch)... and even the toothpick holder was gorgeous. On our last visit we enjoyed some nice aromatic BC wines and we carry them both at the wine shop. All and all, Lime is definitely worth the visit.

What we sipped on...

Pentage Pinot Gris and Nichol Vineyard Gewurztraminer. The Pinot Gris went nicely with the flavours and nuances of the food, while the Gewurztraminer was enjoyed after dinner on it’s own.

Pentage Pinot Gris 2007
Winemaker's notes: The wine is pale golden in colour. Fresh aromas of fig, apricot and citrus jump out of the glass. Ripe tropical fruit with flavors of melon, bartlett pear and crisp apples follow on the pallet. Well balanced acidity with a lingering finish. Silver Medal - Northwest Wine Summit Competition.
Nichol Vineyard Gewurztraminer 2007
Winemaker's notes: The 2007 Gewurztraminer is a bright pear in colour with aromas of rose petal, lychee and violet. Flavours follow along with those of mango and spice. This is a full wine with a crisp green apple and citrus finish. Wonderful on its own or paired with spicy seasonal dishes.

What we ate...

Crispy Avocado
Avocado rice croquette stuffed with mozzarella, served with cocktail sauce | Delightful textures and flavours, whimsical presentation!

Agedashi Tofu
Deep fried tofu vegetable ball | Not your traditional agedashi tofu. Lime's version is a modern interpretation... we won't say more!

Spicy Tuna Roll
Chopped Tuna with sesame chili sauce | Yummmmmmm with bite!

Lobster Roll
Atlantic Lobster, mango, avocado and tobiko with cucumber wrap | Beautifully presented. Delicate and harmonious flavours all rolled into one.
Beef Rib
Slow-cooked soy gravy, served with pan-seared gailan, oyster mushroom and potato | A rich and mouth-coating, saucy dish with fall-off-the-bone tender meat.
Saikyo Sablefish
Slow-cooked miso marinated sablefish with
sticky rice and root vegetables
| Not a sharing dish. You'll want this one for yourself!
Mini Burgers
Three mini burgers with lettuce, tomato, onion and wasabi mayo. Three "buns" made with tofu puff rice and rice cracker | This dish should be renamed the "teasing trio" — there's definitely an exploration of textures and flavours here. Very cute, tasty bundles. Leaves you wanting full-sized versions. The different "buns" are what make them unique.

Sashimi & Nigiri Sushi
A wide assortment | Extremely fresh, delicious tasty morsels expertly cut and prepared. Little pieces of art. Always the highlight of each visit.

Yuzu Mousse
Japanese citrus mousse | A light and delicate spoonful to end with. We have yet to try their other desserts due to always being too full! We'll keep you posted.

On our next visit, we are going to try their Soba, handmade buckwheat noodles, in hot daishi broth – a nice way to warm up in this autumn weather!

Monday night's black-teeth tasting was all about Shiraz, Shiraz, Shiraz. Andrew Tierney of Two Hands Wines took us on a tour of the various regions of Australia and explained the conditions that make each of their Picture and Garden Series wines unique. Thank-you to all that attended... and to those who we could not fit in, keep posted for our next Shiraz evening. There was a lot of buzz around the protein tables and we would like to thank Oyama Sausage (one of our faves) for creating a cornucopia of meat, as well as the Benton Brother's Fine Cheese (Jonah & Andrew Benton were also in attendance) for their fabulously paired cheeses. After the tasting was finished, and all the guests had gone, the team got a preview of the soon to arrive Two Hands Coach House Shiraz. It is a block-buster of a wine with a stunning package (now that's what I call a bottle!). Sorry, couldn't resist. We also tried some of their Napa Valley wines that will arrive closer to Christmas.

Wines we tasted at the event:

PICTURE SERIES

ANGELS SHARE

Shiraz 2006
McLaren Vale
Winemaker's Notes:
Assertive aromas, bursting with blackberry, bramble and white pepper. Glossy, dark cherry, mulberry fruit with fresh acidity and fine tannins. A classy wine that brings to the fore the best attributes of McLaren Vale Shiraz.

GNARLEY DUDES

Shiraz 2006
Barossa Valley
Winemaker's Notes: Gnarly Dudes is made with fruit sourced from mature vineyards in the sub regions of Marananga, Greenock and Light Pass. The palate is filled with rich flavours of spice, black pepper, raspberry, plum and liquorice allsorts.

BAD IMPERSONATOR

Shiraz 2006
Barossa Valley
Winemaker's Notes: Matured in French oak, this is a single vineyard wine that exhibits distinctive spicy aromas, underpinned by cushions of dark-plum and Christmas cake. A crowd pleaser that brings many a smile.

THE BULL & THE BEAR

Shiraz Cabernet 2005
Barossa Valley
Winemaker's Notes: A classic Australian blend in which the juicy Shiraz component fills the middle palate and the Cabernet Sauvignon provides structure, savoury tannin and grip. This is a wine that needs time to strut its stuff.

GARDEN SERIES

SAMANTHA'S GARDEN

Shiraz 2006
Clare Valley
Winemaker's Notes:
An elegant style that is typical of the Clare Valley region, characterised by bright lively aromas, subtle fruit flavours and fine grained tannins.

LILY'S GARDEN

Shiraz 2006
McLaren Vale
Winemaker's Notes: The pick of the bunch from our McLaren Vale vineyards. Lily’s Garden is a generous wine with cascading blue fruits and a rich long palate.

BELLA'S GARDEN

Shiraz 2006
Barossa Valley
Winemaker's Notes:
A blend of our finest Shiraz barrels from across the Barossa Valley region. This is a sumptious wine, defined by its aromatic complexity
and finesse.

Portugal

Please join us Tomorrow, Saturday, September 20th between 4-7pm to try some wines from various regions of Portugal.

We'll be trying a selection of wines by Azul Portugal, one from Quinta da Veiga da Casa da Capela, called Casas das Mouras. It is made from a blend of Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca and Tinta Roriz and also a wine from Quinta das Touquinheiras made from the Alvarinho grape.

Portugal has a tradition of making wine since ancient times and has exported it since the days of the Roman Empire. Today, their wines offer exceptional value as the quality for the price you pay is much greater than many other countries. With over 400 native grape varietals, the Portugese are making much more variety than just your standard Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. There is definitely many opportunities to expand your palate and to learn new things.

Hope to see you there!

ABOUT AZUL PORTUGAL
Azul Portugal makes wines from the most important wine regions of Portugal. Their method is to find an excetptional winemaker from each region, and have them make a wine that uses native grapes that showcases the wine of that specific area. They differenciate the regions by using a colour coded system, keeping things simple and straightforward. This is a great way to introduce yourself to the variety of wines this country makes and to discover the individuality of each region.

Special Event: Gastropod Restaurant + Skillogalee Wines!

Wednesday, July 2nd, 8pm at the Wine Shop

Cost: $45.00

This event has been a few months in the making so we are very excited to finally announce our Gastropod + Skillogalee tasting. Our special guests will be Chef/owner Angus An of Gastropod Restaurant and Winemaker/owner David Palmer of Skillogalee Estate Winery from Clare Valley, South Australia. Meet two very interesting men from opposite corners of the world, hear about their passions of food + wine and wine + food, but best of all, TASTE their creations!

David Palmer will give us a flavour of the Clare Valley as he shares with us his hand-crafted wines. We’ll be tasting Skillogalee’s Sparkling Riesling, Trevarrick Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Rosé, Shiraz and Trevarrick Cabernet Sauvignon. The Trevarrick wines are his best, are very limited and only a sprinkling of cases made it over here.

For this event, Angus An has thought “outside the menu” and has let the wines inspire him. He has come up with some very innovative food pairings that will surely surprise and delight the palate! For Angus, food, art and science all play an integral role in his cooking. His culinary creations are an experience in itself–an exploration of flavours, aromas and textures, all beautifully presented.

An event not to be missed!

After graduating from the French Culinary Institute in New York City and many years working under the wings of legendary chefs in New York, Europe and Montreal, Angus came home to Vancouver and opened Gastropod in 2006. Since then, Gastropod has received numerous accolades–Gold for Best New Fine Dining and Silver for Best Design in Vancouver Magazine’s 18th Annual Restaurant Awards and to quote Mia Stansby of the Vancouver Sun, “Angus An’s dishes balance lovely food that blurs the lines between European and North American cuisine, with just a touch of Asian”. In early spring of this year, Angus was invited to cook at the James Beard House in New York City–an honour reserved for some of the best chefs in North America.

Skillogalee is a boutique winery making world class, hand crafted wines since 1976. They are family-owned and operated and a father and son winemaking team. Their wines have won gold and silver medals at the London International Wine Challenge. Their wines are produced exclusively from grapes grown on their own vineyards, planted in the countour of shallow stony soils mainly on steep eastern facing slopes of the Clare Valley. They are one of the highest vineyards in South Australia.

As a small producer, Skillogalee can create individual wines in small batches (like the Trevarrick Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon). The vines are hand-pruned and the fruit is mainly hand-picked from their very low yield vineyard. Fruit handling and vinification are undertaken using the best of traditional and modern technologies–modern winemaking techniques for whites to preserve the fruit aromas and flavours, and more traditional techniques for reds, using open fermenters and basket pressing to maximise flavour and colour without over-extraction.

This just in: Quinta Ferreira Estate Winery + Senova Restaurant tasting
Saturday June 7th, 4-7pm at the Wine Shop

Cost: FREE!

Join us on Saturday, June 7th, between 4 and 7pm for a taste of BC and Portugal. Quinta Ferreira Winery and Senova Restaurant will be here at the Wine Shop and we are very happy to have them!

Quinta Ferreira is a family-owned, award-winning boutique winery on the Black Sage Bench in Oliver, BC. With their Portuguese heritage and great love of wine, owners John and Maria made the decision to convert their fruit orchard to a vineyard in 1999–a great move in our opinion, as the dry and arid conditions of the desert climate are ideal for growing quality grapes.

Manuel Ferreira (no relation to the winery—just a happy coincidence), owner of Senova and La Gavroche, will also be joining us for this event. He will bring with him a sampling of Senova’s "cuisine of the sun”– foods that capture the warmth and personality of the Iberian Peninsula. Since opening their doors in 2005, they have received numerous awards and to quote Mia Stansby of the Vancouver Sun, “this is the best Portugese food this city has ever seen”. Another BC Hightlight! event not to be missed. Hope to see you here!

Please note: as there is currently some road work being done on Broadway, we encourage people to park in the back of the shop.

We would like to thank Flame & Sylvia, reps of Seven Stones Winery and Jonah & Andrew Benton of Benton Brothers Cheese shop for participating in our recent BC Highlight! event. THANK YOU to all who came out that perfect, sunny Saturday and to the three ladies who missed the event and accidentally came in the following day! Overall, the day went great. Flame surprised us with a bottle of Quinta Ferriera Rosé to taste and Jonah brought along some extra goodies. Cheeses were matched to the wines poured... and needless to say, pairings were delicious.

It was terrific seeing Flame & Sylvia back at the wine shop as they are both part of Broadway Wine Shop's alumni. We have personally known them since their beginning days in the biz. Sylvia, as many of you may know, was our store manager for over 16 years and Flame cut her teeth with us before moving on to becoming marketing extraordinaire for such notable brands as Moët & Chandon. They have recently started Saffire Wines, an import agency, and we are very proud of them! Together we'll be concocting some exciting events, so stay tuned!

We first met Jonah & Andrew Benton at the wine shop as they are customers of ours. We discovered that they supply one of our all time weaknesses: CHEESE!... and we couldn't have been happier. Transplanted from back East, the Benton Brothers opened shop in Kerrisdale about 6 months ago. Don't let this short amount of time fool you, as cheese has been their passion and career for many years. Being a boutique cheese shop, they focus on smaller and more interesting producers. Every one of their cheeses have a story and they will gladly share it with you. Make sure to visit them and let them know we sent you!

Jonah sent us a recap of the cheeses that were tasted (see below). The fave was the Borough Market Cheddar (England) and the best pairings were the Laguiole (one of the world's most ancient cheeses from France) with the Seven Stones Chardonnay and the Comté Marcel Petite (France) with the Seven Stones Pinot Noir. Chris particularly liked the Bleu De Bresse (France) with the Seven Stones Cabernet Merlot... as for the Quinta Ferreira Rosé, it paired well with everything.

Cheeses:

Charles VII
For us, this is a great understudy to the real McCoy. Although true authentic Camembert must be raw milk and carry AOC designation, this version is one of our favorites. Being low-heat pasteurized, many of the flavor-producing bacteria have not been annihilated by high heat pasteurization temperatures, therefore leaving intact many of the bacteria which contribute to the deep and luscious flavours in this cheese. Mushrooms, garlic and woodsy notes are enveloped in creamy goodness. For a wine match, experiment with both slightly oaked New World Chardonnay as well as the classic French unoaked varietal.
Laguiole (pronounced la-YOLE)
As one cheese afficionado stated in his cheese tome, this cheese is ‘magnificent in flavour and size’. Is made in 35 to 40 kg barrel shapes that are almost as wide as they are high. It is always made from raw milk and has firm, tight texture that gives way to a bursting tang and bonus hints of fennel and thyme. Laguiole is made in Rouergue, in the Massif Central in France and is a close cousin to Cantal and Salers which are among the worlds most ancient cheeses. This cheese marries well with wine – both reds and whites, nothing too tannic or acidic.
Bleu De Bresse
Bleu de Bresse has only been made for about 40 years and the story goes that it was the French attempting to imitate the Italian Gorgonzola… it’s hard to imagine that the French would deign to copy something Italian, in the world of cheese! Regardless, we do not see its similarity to Gorgonzola, but we think it is a very fine cheese in its own right. Creamy, not too strong nor too salty, and slightly spicy, it is a blue cheese that is often enjoyed by those who might have thought they were not blue fans. Lovely with Oaky Chardonnay, California Zinfandel, ports or other sweet wines.
Borough Market Cheddar (Quicke’s Cheddar)
From our friends at Neal’s Yard Dairy in Borough Market in London, this is the ‘real deal’ when it comes to authentic cheddar. That does not mean that we are turning up our noses at the fabulous small production cheddars made here in Canada, however, in the realm of traditional cloth-bound English cheddar, this is a very fine representation. It is three years old and has strong vegetal notes with horseradish being one in particular that we detect! It has a thick, chewy texture – there is much to love about this cheese! This cheese is great with a wide variety of beer, or Bordeaux style blends.
Manchego (mon-CHAY-go)
Manchego is Spain's most famous cheese. Produced in La Mancha in Central Spain, true Manchego is made from 100% sheep's milk. Cheeses from Spain are commonly made from sheep's milk because most of the territory is rocky and dry, unfriendly to cows but suitable to raising goats and sheep. The abundance of wild herbs on Central Spain's grazing lands gives Manchego a special taste and aroma. Its flavor is zesty and exuberant while its texture is firm and somewhat dry. Manchego can be recognized by the zigzag pattern etched into its rind. This is created by the rippled surface of the press used in the manufacture of the cheese. Underneath the inedible rind, the interior is ivory colored with few small holes. Many say that Spanish Tempranillo is the wine for this cheese, but it is extremely wine friendly and works well with many softer reds and full bodied whites.
Comté Marcel Petite (Cohn-tay)
We have heard it said that this is the most widely eaten cheese in France… based on its unfailing popularity with our French clientele and the fact that almost everyone who tries this cheese loves it, we are not surprised! This raw cow’s milk cheese is made in the mountains of Jura in the Franche-Comté region. This particular producer makes the Comté at an even higher altitude than most, and ages if for a longer period of time, giving it that much more depth and character. When we cut open these 40kg wheels, aromas of wildflowers and honey are prevalent. It is also quite nutty. Comté is often described as a French Gruyère, indicating its similarity to this famous Swiss cheese.

Seven Stones Winery & Benton Brothers Fine Cheese tasting
Saturday May 24th, 4-7pm at the Wine Shop

Cost: FREE!

As part of our BC Highlight! we will be hosting a complimentary tasting on May 24th between 4 and 7pm. At this event we will be trying the wines of Similkameen Valley's Seven Stones and as a special treat we will also have Kerrisdale's Benton Brothers Fine Cheese shop as our guests.

The name Seven Stones comes from the legend of the seven individual rock formations throughout the Similkameen Valley known as The Seven Stones. The winery itself is a boutique producer as they made only 1,800 cases of wine in 2006 and less in earlier vintages. Also to note, their 2005 Chardonnay took a Gold medal at the 2007 All-Canadian Wine Championships. We definitely support the smaller wine producers in British Columbia so we hope to see a lot of people try these wines to find out what makes them special and unique.

Kerrisdale's Benton Brothers Fine Cheeses will be at the wine shop and they have put together some fine cheese pairings to go with the wines. If you haven't had the chance to visit them, please do as they have a great selection of fine cheeses, patés, smoked and cured meats.

Please note: as there is currently some road work being done on Broadway, we encourage people to park in the back of the shop.

Wines to be tasted as the event:

2006 Seven Stones, Chardonnay — Similkameen, BC

The wine begins with a toasty, buttery aroma with a hint of citrus. On the palate, the wine has flavours of tangerine and orange peel, subtly supported with oak. The texture is full and rich.
John Schreiner review

Seven Stones, Pinot Noir
— Similkameen, BC
Rhubarb, sour cherry, spicy, mineral, licorice aromas. Soft, round, dry, elegant palate with candied sour cherry, rhubarb, carrot top, tea leaf flavours. Brisk, warm finish but has some finesse.
Anthony Gismondi review

Seven Stones, Cabernet Sauvignon + Merlot — Similkameen, BC

This blended red wine is an excellent example. It begins with aromas
of almost perfumed fruit layered over vanilla and chocolate. These elements carry through to flavours of spiced currants, plums and more chocolate.
The ripe tannins give the wine a satisfying chewy texture but also the
backbone to allow graceful aging for at least five more years.
John Schreiner review

New Arrivals (this week) from Around the World.

passomaggio
2002 Passomaggio, Red Wine — Sicily, Italy

Winemaker's Notes: A luscious blend of Sicily's own Nero d'Avola (80%) and noble Merlot (20%), Passomaggio has all the concenration, intensity and sultry amomas of this breathtaking island. Estate-grown on elevated vineyards towering over the sea, warmed by the fiery Mediterranean sunlight and cooled by gentle nighttime breezes, the grapes ripen to heightened levels of extract, fine-tuned by 10 months in oak barrels.
$31.00
wild rock
2007 Wild Rock, Sauvignon Blanc — Marlborough, New Zealand

Winemaker's Notes: One of our growers is nicknames "Goose", and with the distinctive flavour of gooseberries found in Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc we didn't have to look for a name for this wine. It has fresh flavours of lime and gooseberries that finish crisp and restrained on the palate. Drink whenever there is sun, surf or seafood.
$27.60
hooley dooley
2005 Hooley Dooley, Red Wine Blend — S.W. Australia

Winemaker's Notes: The dictionary says it's a uniquely Australian expression of surprise and awe, tinged with amazement. We recon it's what you say when you can't pronounce Dowie Doole. The wine is a judicious blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz and Merlot made by those brillantly clever people at Dowie Doole.
$23.90

2006 De Bortoli, Gulf Station, Riesling — Yarra Valley, Australia

Winemaker's Notes: The Gulf Station Riesling comes from 17 year old vines on our original winery vineyards at Dixons Creek. Fruit was gently pressed and fermented in both oak casks and stainless steel tanks. Frequent lees stirring for two months after fermentation has given additional complexity and texture.
$26.40

2005 Clarendelle, Sauvignon + Semillon — Bordeaux, France

Clarendelle is the newest addition to Château Haut-Brion, the oldest of all the First Growth Estates. The estate has recently launched an exceptional line of wines under the Clarendelle label. Winemaker's Notes: The Clarendelle white 2005 is a beautifully balanced combination of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc that has hints of grapefruit, pineapple, lemon/lime, with touches of mineral notes. The palate is rich and offers a beautiful fresh finish.
$39.60

2004 Toscolo, Chianti Classico — Tuscany, Italy

Winemaker's Notes: It's depth and richness are immediately evident in the full colour and ample bouquet. The combination of structure, appeal and versatility is typical of the region"s best, allowing it to embrace a wide variety of food.
$29.90

2005 Peltier Station, Petite Sirah — Lodi, California, USA

Winery Notes: This winning wine was awarded best of class, best of appellation at the 2006 and 2007 California State Fair. Made by well-known winemaker, JC van Staden, this wine features an aroma of wild berries, caramel, pepper and earth. It has a full middle body and finishes with you asking for more.
$34.50
muga
2005 Muga, White Wine Blend — Rioja, Spain

89 Points - Robert Parker, The Wine Advocate Issue 166 August 2006. The Beautiful 2005 Muga Blanco is a modern-styled white composed of 90% Viura and 10% Malvasia, all aged four months in French oak. This impressive, dry, elegantly-styled Rioja offers scents of honeysuckle, citrus oil, white currants, and flowers.
$28.85
attica
2005 Atteca, Old Vines, Granacha — Calatayud, Spain

Winemaker's Notes: Meticulously hand harvested clusters of fully matured Granacha grapes were selected from only the finest hillside vineyards located 3,000 ft above sea level. These vineyards were planted in the last decades of the nineteenth and the first decades of the twentieth centuries. Over a hundred years ago the local growers knew that the combination of poor gravelly slate soils, high altitudes, and arid conditions produced the best grapes. The wine, Atteca, produced today upholds these long held beliefs. Deep rich blackberry flavours persists on a long supple finish and are highlighted by the vibrant shimmering claret color.
$34.85
prisoner
The Prisoner, Orin Swift — Napa Valley, USA

Winemaker's Notes: The 2006 blends the lush berry flavors of Zinfandel(51%), the power and concentration of Cabernet Sauvignon (23%), the dark black fruit of Syrah (12%), the intensity and structure of Petit Sirah (6%), the flesh of Charbono (6%) and a hint of Grenache (2%) - all combined for a decadent wine with great complexity.
$54.85

2006 Echeverria, Carmenére — Molina, Chile

Winemaker's Notes: Intense and fruity, this Carmenére has fresh aromas of mullberry and strawberry that mingle with jammy flavours and roasted red pepper notes. Velvety and smooth, it has a full bodied palate and tasty finish.
$18.85

zind
2006 Zind-Humbrecht "Zind", Alsace, France
(350ml)
This wine is created from a blend of grapes that creates an interpretation on the Alsace theme - intense, aromatic and powerful flavours created for maximum enjoyment when the wine is young. With that said, it also has the ability to age well very well, taking on new characteristics and added depth.
$25.85

BC Highlight!

Although we have new arrivals from Italy, France, Spain, Argentina, S Africa, US, New Zealand and Australia... BC is our feature of the moment. We will continue to let everyone know of new arrivals as Spring releases flow in. Newcomers are...

The Cherry Point Vineyards wine has not been in our store for a few years because their production has been too low to sell to retail. Their entire stock was sold at the winery or to restaurants... but now their production is up and they are once again back with us. We encourage people to try this hard to find wine from the Cowichan Valley in Vancouver Island. As a side note, their wines took 11 awards at the 2006 All Canadian Wine Festival and 2006 Northwest Wine Summit, including "Best in Category".

The Hillside Estate, Old Vines Gamay Noir is very, very limited and we were only able to get a single case of 12 bottles. Once this is gone it is gone for the year. Made from some of the oldest vines in the Okanagan Valley. Only 500 cases produced. We had a chance to taste it recently and here are some of our thoughts: great easy drinking wine, exhibits fine tannins, notes of rich, ripe red fruit. It's quite pleasant on its own without food as you really get to appreciate the depth and nuances of flavours. It would also pair well with lighter foods.

The Antelope Ridge winery in Oliver, is a boutique winery that used to go by the name Domaine Combret. The Combret family had been producing wine in France for 10 generations when they sold their winery and moved to the Okanagan in 1992. They made wines in an old-world style but were often getting confused with another BC winery (Domaine de Chaberton). Along with the name change is a greater focus on creating new world style wines that are richer and more intense with a focus on polish and approachability.

Lastly is the Noble Ridge winery, a newcomer that opened in 2005 with the motto, "the future of Old World excellence". Their 2004 Meritage is more towards the Bordeaux style with Merlot as the main component. For being a new winery, they've racked up a lot of awards including Silver medals for their 2004 Meritage at the Los Angeles International Wine Competition, the New World International Wine Competition and the Okanagan Fall Festival Wine Competition. Not that these awards are definitive proof that it's a good wine, however, it does confirm our liking of it when we tried it last week.

Burrowing Owl 2004 limited release
Saturday, April 26th (1 bottle limit per customer)

One of the most common phone calls we get is, "do you have any Burrowing Owl?" Unfortunately, 99% of the time we have to say no because these are some of the hardest wines to get ahold of. We are happy to say that we do have some now and if you'd like to get your hands on one, this is your opportunity! Also to note, these are the only reds we are going to get from the winery this year so act fast.

2004 Burrowing Owl, Cabernet Sauvignon - Oliver BC

Winemaker’s Notes: This is a vibrant Cabernet Sauvignon with
rich, outgoing varietal character and flavours, complemented
by great body, and backed by the mellowest of tannins. Full
blackberry and plum flavours are ornamented by nuances of
mint, chocolate and subtle spices. This is a big, flavourful
Cabernet Sauvignon with great finesse.
meritage
2004 Burrowing Owl, Meritage - Oliver BC

Winemaker’s notes: A beautiful deep, velvety wine with loads of layered complexities. Rich bouquet of blackberry with hints of almond, mahogany and beetroot. Smooth, lush berry fruit flavours are infused with chocolate and cola through a long, elegant finish. This wine is a very exciting marriage of the traditional Bordeaux varieties.

2007 Cedar Creek, Ehrenfelser - Kelowna BC
Winemaker’s notes: An elegant nose of fresh flowers, honeysuckle
and pink grapefruit with hints of peach, nectarine and lime.

This wine has also had a lot of people asking for it. We only have
a small allocation of it this year, so again, if you are interested in
in this wine, get it soon because we will have no more till next vintage.

Osoyoos LaRose "Pétales d’Osoyoos" - Okanagan Valley BC
"Osoyoos LaRose's little brother is big- meaty, burley and brawny.
I suggest you decant it for at least one hour. Black cherry, plum,
black current and leather aromas with dried fruit and earthy-
woodsy notes. Intense on the palate with cocoa, tobacco, leather,
spice and aggressive tannins that soften with decanting.
Recommended eats are strictly protein based."

notaup

Sean Murphy — congratulations!!!

We would like to thank everybody who came in this past Saturday, April 19th 2008 for the Nota Bene! We would also like to thank all who participated in this draw! It was an exciting day for us and we definitely had a lot of fun. There was a steady stream of people coming in all day long and we were glad to make a lot of people happy. It's what it's all about... the enjoyment of wine.

We will be holding more customer appreciation events from time-to-time so stay tuned for our next one.

Please note: there will be sidewalk construction for the next few weeks, so please make use of the parking in the back of the store. Just ring the doorbell.

Cheers!

Nota Bene 2006 release
Saturday, April 19th, 11am sharp (1 bottle limit per customer)

1700 cases of the Nota Bene were produced. This year the winery sold out the entire vintage in roughly 40 minutes!!! That's at the winery...

Our allocation of Black Hills Winery's flagship wine has arrived and will go on sale this Saturday, April 19th, at 11am. We are not taking any reservations for this wine so there is no need to call in advance. There is a 1 bottle limit per customer so we can make it available to a larger number of people.

Also... everyone with a purchase over $100 on Saturday will be entered into a draw to WIN a bottle of the 2006 Nota Bene! The winner will be announced on Monday on our website, so please check back to see if it's you!

What is being said about this wine:

“This is the first vintage of Nota Bene that has been produced from our new, state-of-the-art winery. Previous vintages were produced from the quaint but technically limited Quonset hut on Black Sage Road. The new facility has been a godsend to the winemaking craft as it has enabled a more exacting handling of the wines in temperature-controlled conditions. As a result, Senka has been thrilled with how the 2006 vintage has been shaping up in the bottle. She is of the feeling that this is the best Nota Bene that she has produced yet, and that it is very approachable and drinkable even now. She eagerly anticipates the market reaction to this wine.”

Judging from the immediate sell-out of this entire vintage, this is a testament to the quality and dedication Senka brings to this wine—truly a great effort. Nota Bene will be a great addition to any collection!

notabene
2006 Nota Bene, Oliver BC

47% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc.
Total Production 1700 cases.
Winemaker’s notes: Appealing for its’ layers of dark fruit with a hint of spice, olives, and cedar on the nose. Full bodied and balanced with silky velvety tannins and a great lengthy rich finish.
