Forbidden Fruit Winery has received a Platinum award at the 10th Annual Wine Press Northwest Platinum Judging for their 2008 Caught Apricot Mistelle.

Wine Press Northwest, an independently published magazine out of Walla Walla, Washington, annually invites wineries from Washington, Oregon, British Columbia and Idaho to enter wines in the Best of the Best in the Pacific Northwest, that have won gold medals this year in a recognized national or international competition. These wines are tasted again and awarded accordingly by the distinguished panel of judges. To win a Platinum, three out of four judges must agree to its greatness. This year there were a record 450 wines entered with 44 wines receiving Platinum awards.

Wineries Notes:
A fortified wine made from a delicate apricot nectar. Several varieties of organic tree ripened apricots are used in this fortified wine. The tartness of the fruit is balanced by some sweetness on the palate. Tree ripening the fruit contributes to the body of the wine. Served chilled as an aperitif or digestif. Great with cheese or exotic desserts.

Passion

Photo: Three Degrees Creative Group

 map

For the past six months I have been stocking, dusting, selling and developing a school boy crush on Australian producers Some Young Punks Cab/Shiraz "Passion Has Red Lips", but had failed to ever take this particular red head home. Quite honestly, I am very glad I finally did so. Originally intrigued by its 90 point score from Wine Spectator, this 2007 vintage is unlike most New World Cab/Shiraz blends I have tried. Essentially a 50-50 split (51% Cabernet), this wine has a lot to offer. Almost as full bodied as the very curvy 50's style pin-up girl which graces the label, this ruby coloured wine is ripe with flavours of cherry and maybe even some black current and raspberry. Like making eye contact with that special someone from across a crowded room, all it took was one quick sip before the butterflies started. As is the case in many blank relationships, this wine starts off soft and sweet at the tip of your tongue, but develops it's true character mid palette and finishes with soft welcoming tannins that linger like a first kiss. Most surprising to me, other than the fact this bottle has agreed to a second date, was it's 15% alcohol content. Neither hot in the mouth nor throat, the "Passion" is an extremely well balanced journey. I'm thinking a perfect pairing with grilled steak, lamb, a hearty stew, or even an empty glass. From label to lips to last sip this wine is made to be comforting, unpretentious and enjoyed with friends. Next time you're in the shop take a moment to search this beauty out, you just never know when you may find the love of your life!

burgundy

The word burgundy usually conjures images of rich mahogany and ruby reds in the eyes and minds of most wine drinkers. The weighty word rolls off the tongue with visions of crimson beauty, as opposed to golden glory. To think that only fine red wines emerge from the Burgundy region of France, is like thinking Quebec is the only province in Canada to produce high calibre hockey players. Both trains of thought are extremely wrong! Today, white Burgundy is at least as important as its red counterparts, if not more so. blank France's Burgundy region is composed of thousands of small-scale growers, often with very small parcels of land, who may make a range of a dozen or more wines. The most common red grape in the area is the Pinot Noir, while the Chardonnay is King of the Whites. The region lies a couple of hundred miles east and north of Bordeaux. The vineyards of Burgundy run in a long thin line from Auxerre in the North to Lyon in the South. The climate in Burgundy is quite continental in that the winters are cold, the summers hot and the rainfall plentiful.

map

Much like Bordeaux's Chateaux system of vineyards, Burgundy boasts a number of Domaines. These producers tend to be self sufficient, in that they control the winemaking process from crisp, sharp grape to finished, labelled bottles. However, a significant amount of the white wines coming from Burgundy originate from 'Negociants'. These are merchants who may not own any vineyards of their own, but will buy grapes or finished products from other area domaines for blending or bottling under their own label.

Much like the sister cities of the GVA, Burgundy has five main regions
(from North to South);

  1. Chablis -- Known exclusively for dry, whites
  2. The Côte de Nuits -- Home of the great red Burgundies, and some whites. The red's are this area's glory.
  3. The Côte de Beaune -- Known for both reds and whites, but the best white Burgundies (not from Chablis) stem from here
  4. The Côte Chalonnaise -- Regarded as a lesser district, but still produces some very nice wines in both varietals
  5. The Maconnais -- The southern limit of Burgundy. Wines tend to be less expensive and made for drinking young, but there are still excellent values to be found

blank

In Canada, our finest wines are enveloped by the VQA classification. If a domestic bottle of wine displays a VQA mark (Vintners Quality Alliance), it has been tested, analyzed and defined as being of the highest quality. In France, a similar classification system is utilized. The Appellation d'Origine Controlee (Controlled Appellation of Origin or AOC) is the highest level of recognition that a wine can reach. All of the classic French wines belong to this classification. The region of Burgundy has a higher number of AOC's than any other French region. Frances' wine classification systems breaks down into four main levels:

  1. Grand Cru -- Roughly 2% of the region's wine production. Grand Cru wines are generally produced in a style meant for cellaring, and typically need to be aged 5-7 years. These wines are produced by the small number of the best vineyard sites.
  2. Premier Cru -- Accounts for about 12% of wine production. These wines are produced from specific vineyard sites that are considered high quality, but not as well regarded as the Grand Cru. Premier Cru wines should often be aged 3-5 years, but the best can keep much longer.
  3. Village -- Village wines make up approximately 36% of all production. Produced from a blend of wines, often from "lesser" vineyards. Village wines are meant to be consumed within 2-4 years after production.
  4. Regional -- These are wines which are allowed to be produced over the entire region, or over an area larger than a specific village. Regional's can be divided into three groups;
    i) AOC Bourgogne - "Generic" appellation for red or white wines made anywhere throughout the region. Simple wines similar to those of the villages. Typically intended for immediate consumption (within about 3 years after production).
    ii) Subregional - Appellations that cover a part of Burgundy larger than a village.
    iii) Wines of specific styles

Now that we have introduced you to the geography, history and classifications of Burgundy region whites, why not (re)introduce your taste buds to them as well. You will find a number of excellent Burgundy whites at Broadway International Wine Shop;

Fuel for passion!

Aside from wine, we try to bring in products that we just love... ones that can be found in our own pantries and ones that we know very well. This ranges from olives & olive oils, artisanal preserves & jellies... and handcrafted chocolates.

If you've ever been to one of our tastings, you may have had a taste of some of these tasty edibles... often paired with the cheeses from some of our favourite shops. Not only do these make nice gifts on their own, they can pair very well with the right wines.

Here are some of the newly arrived delights:

ARTISAN EDIBLES
The perfect way to begin Valentine's Day is with some Artisan Edibles Rose Petal Scones with crème fraîche & Champagne Rose Petal jelly... and some bubbly! The scones are just too easy to make and your partners will definitely be impressed. Both the scones and the jelly are made with actual wild rose petals picked near their home in Parksville on Vancouver Island.

If you want to explore more than one, we have trio gift sets of the jellies and chutneys... mix & match flavours such as Raspberry Cardamon, Blueberry Lavender, Champagne Rose Petal, Wild Mirabelle Plum or Apple Fig Ginger Chutney. These come beautifully presented in a handmade-paper, 3 windowed gift bag.

We also have their larger jars of addictive Antipasto with Albacore Tuna and even more addictive Cherry Rhubarb Chutney.

CHOCOLATE ARTS

A new arrival this year is Chocolate Arts and on a personal note, they've been one of our favourites since they opened in 1989. Their handcrafted chocolates are made in small batches using only the finest, locally sourced, organic ingredients available. All purees, concentrates, essences, most dried fruits and flavoured alcohols are made in-house. Here's what we brought in especially for Valentine's Day:

Crispy Raspberry Heart
A solid heart with house-made raspberry leather, crispy cookie wafer & dark chocolate in a thin milk chocolate shell & highlighted with 24 Karat gold.

Caramel Truffle Heart
A dark chocolate heart box with a top & bottom. Contains 3 creamy, delectable, caramel truffles.

Strawberry & Champagne Seduction Box

A box containing 8 strawberry & champagne Seductions. The Seduction is a dark chocolate shell containing a layer of strawberry gelée made with local strawberries & a layer of champagne truffle ganache.

THOMAS HAAS CHOCOLATES

Having made regular trips to their N Vancouver Cappuccino Bar & Patiserrie, how could we not bring in another favourite! Thomas Haas Chocolates have been a constant at the wine shop and now we have their new Chocolate Confection line. They are handcrafted with great attention to detail, from the chocolates themselves to the attractive die-cut packaging they come in... and yes, we've tried them all! Here's what we brought in:

Hazelnut Crisp
Hazelnut crisp dipped in milk chocolate.
